A Letter of Response from TNGCA

Dear TNGCA membership,

The murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and many other Black Americans have brought greater awareness to the systemic racism in our country and world, and we wanted to highlight resources that are currently available and our future plans to continue this discussion with our membership.

  1. The NSGC Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion statement can be found here: https://www.nsgc.org/p/bl/et/blogaid=1201. We share in the statement for solidarity  with the Black community and commit to partner with our members, colleagues, students, and patients to connect, support, listen and act for change.

  2. NGSC has made available to members a free online course on implicit bias (fee required for CEUS):  https://www.nsgc.org/p/bl/et/blogid=59&blogaid=1150

  3. On June 4th, ABGC held an event on Twitter called #ABGClistens which invited members of the genetic counseling profession to “begin to identify areas where CGCs can impact the healthcare system and support our peers, students and patients of color.” Log onto Twitter to read the responses from our GC colleagues. ABGC is planning to eventually release a report reflecting on this conversation on their website (abgc.net).

  4. We encourage all to participate in the NSGC Zoom call June 9th at PM CST

Stay tuned for additional educational opportunities and calls to action in the coming weeks. We plan to follow up with a call for TNGCA members later this month to discuss a plan for our state community.

Systemic racism and anti-Blackness is in every institution in our country, including medicine. We as an organization are committed to confronting  racism and racial bias in our practice, our institutions, our organization, and in ourselves. It is not easy work, but it is necessary; the lives of our patients, colleagues, learners, and fellow citizens depend on it.

As always, we are available to the membership to answer any questions or address concerns.

Sincerely,

Martha Dudek, President

Caitlin Mann, Vice President

Gina Nuccio, Secretary/Treasurer

Randa Newman, Committee Director
